Here are questions which clients have asked me several times over the years. I’ve assembled them below in the hopes that it helps you with possible concerns prior to contacting myself or any other MUA (Makeup Artist). If you have a question you feel I should add, I would love for you to send it to me. You can do so via email ([email protected]) or using the contact form under the contact tab.
THE BASICS
1. Why should I consider hiring a Professional Makeup Artist?
I get asked this question a lot and no, it does not upset me. Many feel that they do their makeup very well so why hire a pro for any event? In a nutshell, a Professional Makeup Artist has years of experience and the no-how to not only apply makeup to make it last in all circumstances but also has tips and tricks which can help you cut time in your daily routine or use products which will help your skin look better. We have techniques which we perfect every day and then impart on to you as our clients. Do you want pictures done professionally? This requires a different kind of makeup than what you use every day. What you use may make you look older, or aged than you actually are which we can avoid. We can assist, suggest and create looks which you may not have thought of to bring out your best features. Plus, we play with a variety of cosmetic lines and products so we can advise you on what to use in order to use less or to help with whatever concern you have.
2. What determines the price for a makeup artist?
When you come to an expert, you pay for their talent/skill, their time, their products and their years of experience. What determines the price is all of those things plus market price. In order words, a newly graduated makeup artist would not charge $100/hour as she/he has not gained the expertise or experience to charge that however, someone like myself who has 20+ years experience, charges a little more. Let’s look at it another way, a junior hair dresser would charge less than a shop owner for very good reasons.
3. Very important!!!! Anyone can call themselves a makeup artist!
Buyers beware please! Anyone and I do mean anyone can call themselves a makeup artist. There is certification available however not all people calling themselves makeup artists have them. Please make sure you visit a reputable makeup artist or ask for references. Any good makeup artist will be happy to share these with potential clients. This is a business built on trust and sadly not everyone in it is trustworthy.
4. Do you clean or sanitize your kit?
Absolutely and diligently! I need to ensure that all products used are fully sanitized from one client to the next. Since the skin is the biggest organ of the body, a breakout from one client with brushes cleaned improperly could travel to another leaving that client with a breakout. That’s not professional or ethical and that’s not how I choose to run my business. My brushes, products and all items used are sanitized to hospital standards to ensure this does not happen. When I arrive for our booking, I am ready to go with clean products every time. I will even sanitize products while I am there. This is one area where cleanliness is next to…well you get the picture. Lol
5. I wish to book your services, how does this work and what happens next?
Wonderful, thank you for your trust, I cannot wait to meet and work with you. You can email me ([email protected]) or call me (613-866-4664) or leave a comment on the contact tab on my website to ask if I am available on the date of your event. If I am available, I will suggest a phone call so we can discuss how to make your vision a reality. I will always recommend a trial for new clients and once we’ve discussed the basics on our initial call, we can then meet at the trial. Once the trial is completed, if you love my work, we can proceed with the contract and the deposit for the event.
6. What is the purpose of a trial Run appointment and do I really need one?
A trial run is strongly recommended and are offered for the client's comfort. It is a great way for the Artist and Client to meet and connect for the first time. It is a great way to have a complete make-up application and be able to see how the make-up looks and lasts ahead of time, giving the client plenty of time to ask her makeup artist to make adjustments if necessary.
For Weddings; Ideally (to save you time and money) your trial run is scheduled to coincide with your hair trial as well as your engagement photo shoot, your bridal shower or another special pre-wedding event. During the trial, we will discuss the dress, hairstyle for the big day, accessories and plan your look and then a trial makeup run will be done. The information from the trial run will be recorded by your makeup artist until your big day. A photographer of your choice can be booked for this to best view the results in pictures or we are happy to book one of our trusted photographers for this additional service. *Photographer not part of Trial Run.
Please note the makeup trial is deducted from the price when purchasing a wedding package. We would prefer that makeup trials be conducted in Ottawa.
7. Do you require a deposit to secure event dates?
Yes, a 30% deposit and a signed contract is required in order to secure your booking. This deposit is non-negotiable and non-refundable. A deposit of $30 dollars is required for the Trial Run Consultation. If a deposit was not received, your booking is not secure or considered booked.
8. Will I receive confirmation information for my records?
Yes, prior to your event is booked and your deposit is paid to secure your booking, I will send you an email with all the event details as per our discussion for your review and confirmation. Once approved and your deposit is received, your appointment is considered booked. This email is used as a contract and legally binding. Should we meet in person, I will seek your signature as well as bring you a copy for your records.
9. What type of set up does the makeup artist require?
Preferably a room with natural lighting (or bright lighting) and a medium to large sized table with two comfortable chairs. A quiet, relaxing spot helps to create calm. Soft music and aromatherapy can be added at no extra cost to help accomplish this. Please let me know.
1 0. Where does the makeup application take place? Do you have an office?
In-home or on location (Hotel, photographer studio, boudoir location, event locale or wedding venue) usually within the Ottawa area depending on the event I was hired for. Home services are available from 7:30 am onwards. Extra fees apply for earlier start times.
As a freelancer, I can travel anywhere. My office is technically my car however I come to you and work in your home or venue. This allows you to be most comfortable and relaxed while enjoying the pampering.
SKIN ISSUES AND SENSITIVITIES
11. My skin is very sensitive; can you use my makeup?
If you prefer to use your own products due to skin sensitivity or allergies, it will be my pleasure to use what you bring. Please advise in advance as a quick colour consult may be required to ensure the right base is being used and also enough colours are brought. Also to consider, you may be required to buy more shades to ensure that all bases are covered especially if I am using your makeup for print (headshots, boudoir, photoshoots), tv or weddings as I wish to ensure your makeup does not budge. I do carry lines for sensitive skin which I can test on you (inner arm only) for any skin reaction which is graded for these type of shoots or events.
1 2. I have sensitive skin; can you still do a makeover on me?
Depending on your skin sensitivities, I may have what you need already in my kit. As an example, if you can only use vegan products, then I have the products to offer you a perfect makeover.
Please communicate these concerns to me as soon as possible and we can discuss how to proceed depending on your comfort level. I do use two lines that are made specifically for sensitive skin but note that some of the palettes are restricted. I prefer to do a skin test on your inner arm to make sure that you will have zero reaction before applying anything to the sensitive skin of your face or beyond.
1 3. I have skin concerns, is this something you can help me with?
Absolutely, please communicate any and all concerns as soon as possible to ensure that I am able to assist you or have the right products for your specific needs. There are situations where I will not be able to help, they are rare but they do exist. If you have a communicable disease such as herpes, I am unable to guarantee the safety of all my other clients and as such will need to decline.
1 4. Right before my big event, I have a huge breakout, what do I do?
Scenario: We are scheduled for a booking and you call to let me know you have a breakout due to stress. You are wondering if I can make it disappear.
I have many tricks in my arsenal to do just that and will use everything at my disposal to ensure you look flawless. I also have a history of cystic acne and so have personal experience with this as well. You are in good hands.
SPECIFICS (PRODUCTS, AIRBRUSHING)
15. What product brands do you use?
I use a variety of products depending on the trends and colours of the season but regularly use the following; Arbonne, MAC, Makeup Forever, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Kat Von D, Urban Decay, Smashbox, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Bobby Brown. Kat Von D, Anastasia or DermaBlend are used for tattoo or heavier coverage.
1 6. Do you offer Airbrush Make-up?
No, not at this time.
WEDDING INFO – CONGRATULATIONS!
17. I’m getting married and would like to discuss what look I have in mind. How do I truly know that we’re on the same wave length?
The best way is to accomplish this is by having a Trial Run. After we’ve discussed what look you have in mind, I create 2 mock up looks on paper to show you. This will be your first indication that I’ve truly understood how you wish to look for your event. From there you tell me what you like or wish to change and using this information, we then do the makeup application. Your completed look will determine if we’re on the same wave length or if I delivered and hopefully surpassed the look you wanted.
1 8. Do you offer complimentary makeup application for flower girls or junior bridesmaids?
Depending on the size of the wedding party (at least three bridesmaids as well as the bride), I do offer complimentary makeup application for 2 flower girls or 2 junior bridesmaids under the age of 10. We use a light hand to apply some colours and, perhaps some glitter gloss. It makes them feel as pretty as the bride.
19. Can you accommodate a large wedding party or event?
Yes, I sure can and I have. If the wedding party if larger than 6 including the bride, I would recommend hiring another makeup artist. I work with many which I subcontract so you only have to deal with one payment to one person. I will pay this artist once I receive payment myself.
TRAVEL, DESTINATION WEDDINGS
20. Will you travel outside of Ottawa for an event?
If available of course. Please note that travel, hotel and parking costs will apply. For travel outside of Ottawa, I charge o.86cents per km.

2 2. Destination Wedding

2 3. WEDDING DAY TIPS
Timeline
Every wedding is different and uniquely yours; but from my experience, this is the most common wedding day timeline;
- Your Makeup Artist arrives at agreed location (home, hotel, or wedding venue) at a pre-scheduled time to tend to all makeup requirements for the bride and/or her bridal party (depending on the package chosen).
- Makeup is usually scheduled following hair styling and prior or during the pre-wedding photos. Allow 30-45 minutes per makeup application for bridal party and one hour for the bride who will be done last. You are in good hands; I am experienced, reliable, professionas and will provide you with exceptional service so you'll look and feel relaxed.
- At this time, remaining balance must be paid in full. Please inform your makeup artist if you will be paying for services for attendants so we can collect from you discreetly.
24. Payment Options; e-transfer, credit card, cash, personal check, cash or PayPal.
To secure your booking, a non-negotiable and non-refundable deposit of 30% of the total amount quoted is required to be paid by e-transfer, credit card, personal check or PayPal. Your appointment is not considered booked until payment is received.
If booking a Trial Run, a deposit of $30 is due upon booking and the balance is due at the beginning of trial run.
You may cancel the contract for your wedding day up to 90 days prior to the date of the wedding and only lose your non-negotiable and non-refundable deposit of 30%. After that, you will be charged 50% of the quoted rate payable immediately. If you cancel within 30 days prior to the service date, you will be charged 100% of the quoted rate. Please note that the remainder of the agreed amount is due to day before your wedding. Any additional costs such as parking, can be paid following the wedding as they will incur the day of the wedding and can be unexpected. Please book early to avoid disappointment!
